A communications system and method of operating a vehicle multi-tainment unit (VMU) within that communications system is disclosed. The method includes the steps of: (a) establishing a connection between the VMU and a mobile device; (b) retrieving from a cache associated with the VMU user data previously provided by the mobile device; (c) prior to receiving current user data from the mobile device, receiving via the connection recently-used user data from the mobile device; (d) comparing the previously-provided user data and the received recently-used data; and (e) updating the previously-provided user data based on the comparison.

1. A method of operating a vehicle multi-tainment unit (VMU), comprising the steps of:
(a) establishing a connection between the VMU and a mobile device; (b) retrieving from a cache associated with the VMU a first set of user data that was previously provided by the mobile device; (c) prior to receiving a second set of user data from the mobile device, receiving via the connection a data subset of the second set of user data from the mobile device, wherein the second set of user data includes data currently available to a user of the mobile device, wherein the data subset includes one or more data units most recently available for use on the mobile device by the user; (d) determining whether the one or more data units of the data subset are contained with the first set of user data; and (e) when it is determined in step (d) that at least one of the one or more data units are not contained within the first set of user data, then updating the first set of user data in the cache to include the at least one of the one or more data units.
