A system for limiting engine torque of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle with a four-wheel-drive traction system, comprising: an actuator controlled and configured to distribute engine torque of the internal combustion engine to drive wheels of the motor vehicle; computing means for computing at least one variable characteristic of an operation of the motor vehicle; a module for limiting the engine torque of the internal combustion engine as a function of the at least one variable characteristic, the module for limiting engine torque of the internal combustion engine including: means for generating an engine torque limitation setpoint to actuate the module for limiting engine torque of the internal combustion engine, andmeans for deactivating the module for limiting engine torque of the internal combustion engine as a function of the at least one variable characteristic of the operation of the motor vehicle and for progressively limiting variations of the engine torque of the internal combustion engine over time as a function of temperature of the actuator, wherein the means for deactivating the module for limiting engine torque of the internal combustion engine is configured to selectively generate a first deactivation signal for an immediate deactivation of the module for limiting engine torque of the internal combustion engine and a second deactivation signal for a progressive deactivation of the module for limiting engine torque of the internal combustion engine, and wherein the at least one variable characteristic of the operation of the motor vehicle is different from the temperature of the actuator.
