The detection device includes: a draw-in current computing unit 101 that computes a phase current I a such as to satisfy I a <¨ a /(L q -L d ), using an effective value ¨ a of armature interlinkage magnetic flux by the permanent magnet per phase of the motor, a d-axis inductance L d in a virtual magnetic flux axial direction and a q-axis inductance L q in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic flux axial direction; and an I d computing unit 104a that computes a d-axis current from the phase current I a . The current draw-in operation is performed by causing the d-axis current to flow through armature windings of the motor, to thereby draw the rotor to the magnetic flux axial direction.
