[Class 122 (v)] A flexible packing 14 carried by a metal casing 13 secured to a rotary member 12 is provided with a lip 16 pressed into contact with a stationary member 27 by an encircling spring or springs 20, 21 adapted to yield under centrifugal force and relieve the packing pressure when the member 12 is rotating. When the outer member rotates about a stationary shaft 12b, Fig. 3, the packing is secured to the outer member and a lip 16b on the packing is pressed into contact with the shaft by either or both springs 20b, 21b which yield under centrifugal force. The springs may be adjusted for load by applying a lead wire to the inside of the spring or by dipping the spring into molten lead. |
