Aliphatic mercapto carboxylic or sulphonic acids or their derivatives are added to organic compounds which are free from carboxylic, sulphone, or sulphoxide groups and triple bonds and contain at least six carbon atoms and one olefinic double bond. Esters, amides and in the case of the carboxylic acids, the nitriles are specified derivatives of the mercapto components which may be used. According to modifications of the invention, aliphatic mercaptans are used which contain (a) halogen atoms, or (b) hydroxy groups the latter atoms or groups being subsequently replaced by carboxylic or sulphonic groups. Thus (a) the halogen is replaced by the sulphonic group by treating the sulphide formed as intermediate product with a sulphite or by the carboxylic group by treating with a cyanide followed by saponification and (b) hydroxy sulphides are strongly sulphonated to introduce a sulphonic group or the hydroxy group is replaced by a mineral acid residue e.g. halogen which is treated as (a) above. The resulting sulphides have saponaceous properties. In examples, mercaptoacetic acid is reacted with the following olefinic compounds; decene, a -dodecene, tridecene, tetradecene, a synthetic benzine containing about 20 per cent of olefine, cyclohexene, ethyl-, amyl-, isohexyl-, octyl-and nonyl-cyclohexenes, hexahydrobenzyl-cyclohexenes decahydromenaphthylcyclohexenes, octohydronaphthalene, isopropyloctahy-dronaphthalene and cyclohexylcyclohexene. The use of the following mercaptocarboxylic and sulphonic acids and derivatives thereof are mentioned: thiolactic acid, a -mercaptobutyric acid, a -mercaptolauric acid, b -mercaptoethane - a - sulphonic acid, g -mercapto-b - hydroxypropane - a - sulphonic acid, mercaptoacetylaminoethanesulphonic acid and its N-methyl compound. Specification 444,501 is referred to. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products derived from the following pairs of components; (a) mercaptoethylacetate and dodecene; (b) mercapto acetic acid and cetene; and (c) mercaptoacetic acid and an isoalkylmethylcyclohexene mixture derived, by removal of water, from an isoalkyl methylcyclohexanol mixture (the iso alkyl group containing 8 to 12 carbon atoms). Mercapto carboxylic and sulphonic acids.--These are prepared from the corresponding chlor or brom carboxylic or sulphonic acids by treatment with sodium hydro sulphide. Thus g -mercapto - b - hydroxypropane - a -sulphonic acid is prepared by treating with sodium hydrosulphide, g -chlor-b -hydroxypropane - a - sulphonic acid--which is obtained from glycerol dichlor hydrin by treatment with a sulphite. Mercaptoacetylaminoethanesulphonic acid and the corresponding N-methyl compound are obtained by condensing mercaptoacetic acid with taurine and methyltaurine. Alkylcyclohexenes, hexahydrobenzyl cyclohexene and decahydromenaphthylcyclohexene are obtained by hydrogenation of the corresponding substituted phenols vis, alkylphenols, benzylphenol and menaphthylphenol followed by removal of water. |
