Visualisation of position and orientation of biopsy needle in patient

The system visualises the position and orientation of a biopsy needle (3) relative to tissue (G) during biopsy procedure. It provides a first set of 3-dimensional image data of a patient's tissue area using X-ray computer tomography equipment, before insertion of biopsy needle. The image data is stored in image memory (8). Then the biopsy procedure is carried out and monitored with the X-ray unit (2). A second set of 2-dimensional image data during or after insertion of biopsy needle are taken by the X-ray device in at least two different projection directions and are stored in image memory (11) of X-ray unit. Memories (8,11) are connected to system computer (14), which establishes link between both sets of image data, overlays image data of first set with image data of second set to provide combined set of image data. Data shows position, orientation, form and depth of insertion of needle relative to marked tissue in three-dimensional view.
