In the present invention, a photoelectric conversion unit performs photoelectric conversion on incident light, and a charge transferring unit transfers a charge obtained through the photoelectric conversion from the photoelectric conversion unit to an FD unit. At this time, a connection switch electrically connects the FD unit to another FD unit, causes the charge transferred to the FD unit to be accumulated in the FD unit and in said another FD unit, and then electrically separates the FD unit from said another FD unit. An amplification transistor outputs a signal corresponding to the charge accumulated in the FD unit to a vertical signal line, and another amplification transistor also outputs a signal corresponding to the charge accumulated in said another FD unit to the vertical signal line. The present invention is applicable to solid-state imaging elements.
