Provided is a liquid crystal display element which has: a first substrate and a second substrate arranged facing each other; a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal composition which is interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; a first electrode provided on the first substrate; and a second electrode that is provided on the first substrate and that causes an electric field to be generated between the first electrode and the second electrode. The liquid crystal composition contains a compound represented by general formula (a) and a compound represented by general formula (i), wherein the total contained amount of the compound represented by general formula (i) is 0.1-40 mass% of the total amount of compounds having one or more groups represented by (AA) in the molecules in the liquid crystal composition.
