Rubber derivatives are produced by heating rubber with an excess of one or more phenols at temperatures close to the boiling point of the phenols employed in the presence of one or more acids and/or salts having an isomerizing action; the acids employed should be such as do not combine with the phenols employed and the reaction should be carried out in the absence of solvents for the rubber. The rubber may be vulcanized or not and it may be in the form of latex. Phenols specified are phenol, cresols, and p-tertiary butyl phenol, and derivatives thereof which still contain free phenolic hydroxyl groups such as p-chloro-phenol and salicylic acid. Isomerizing acids and salts specified are halogen hydracids such as hydrochloric acid in the gaseous or dissolved state, phosphoric, boric, sulphurous and trichloracetic acids and the chlorides of aluminium, zinc or tin. A number of methods of purifying the rubber derivatives are described. |
