APPARATUS FOR GRIPPING A TUBULAR ON A DRILLING RIG There is disclosed herein an apparatus (104) for gripping a tubular (112) for use with a top drive, comprising: a connector (1102) at one end for rotationally fixing the apparatus (104) relative to the top drive; one or more gripping members at a second end for gripping the tubular (112); an actuator (106) configured to move and hold the gripping members in contact with the tubular (112); and a lock (1100) coupled to the connector (1102) for preventing the apparatus (104) and the top drive from rotating independently of one another.
