The invention relates to a modular socket and plug system, in which a low-profile plug (100) can be coupled in a conventional RJ-type socket (10) using a first removable cover (200) or using a second removable cover (300). The low-profile plug (100) can also be coupled to a backward-compatible socket (400/500/600) that is also configured to receive a conventional RJ-type plug (20). The low-profile plug (100) can also be coupled to a socket designed specifically to receive the low-profile plug (100). This system allows a new low-profile socket/plug system to be used, while also allowing the use of conventional RJ-type components in the same environment.
