In accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure a method for regenerating an optical signal comprises receiving an optical signal at a network element and measuring a performance characteristic of the optical signal. The method further comprises determining that the optical signal needs regeneration based on the performance characteristic of the optical signal. The method additionally comprises performing signal regeneration of the optical signal based on the determination that the optical signal needs regeneration. |
