This invention relates to a topical composition for prevention and treatment of viral infections.

1. A pharmaceutical topical gel formulation comprising:
at least one cardiac glycoside; alkylene glycol in the range of about 20-60% w/w; ethanol in the range of about 20-60% w/w; at least one thickener in the range of about 0.5% to 5% w/w; a buffer which maintains the formulation pH at about pH 3 to about pH 8; and optionally, polyalkylene glycol in the range of about 0-20% w/w; q.s. with water,wherein the concentrations are based on the total weight of the formulation, further wherein the topical gel formulation is anti-viral.
