Focus detection in a camera by detecting a focusing state based on a signal generated by the image pickup means, setting a first region within an image generated by the image pickup means, displaying the captured image superimposed with an index representing the focusing state detected by the focus detection means within the first region, and obtaining information regarding a predetermined subject in the image. The position of the first region is set based on information regarding at least one of a position, a size and a direction of the predetermined subject in the image. In embodiments, a face 901 and features of a face are detected in the image and, if the face is smaller than a threshold 902, the region is defined around the entire face 911; otherwise, if the face is large enough, the region is defined around one of the eyes. In the latter case, if the face is facing the camera, the region is defined around the eye furthest from the center of the image 907, 908, or, if the face is angled away from the camera, the choice of eye is that which is most likely to be unobscured in the image 909, 910. |
