[Class 34 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] A process for applying adhesive to each of a number of articles comprises applying a water soluble adhesive in liquid form and, immediately thereafter, before drying the adhesive, a dry adhesive which mingles with the water soluble adhesive to increase the quantity of adhesive and at the same time acts as a drier. The machine shown is for gumming envelope flaps. Blanks 4 are fed from a hopper 3 by a rotary roller 2 to feed rollers 6, 7 rotating more slowly than the roller 2 to produce overlapping of the blanks. The edges of the blanks are supported by endless belts 8 with which belts 10 co-operate. The flaps pass over a roller 16 dipping in a glue reservoir 15, rotary rollers 18, 19 offset from the centre of the roller 16 serving to hold blanks with the flaps in contact with that roller. The blanks then pass over a powder-hopper 22 from which powder is thrown on to the blanks by a rotary roller 20 having pointed flutes 21. Reversely-rotating brushes 24, 25 remove excess powder which is returned to the hopper. The blanks may be fed end-to-end instead of overlapping in which case a gummer having the exact outline of the gummed part is used; also, the powder may be applied by spraying and the excess removed by suction. The powder may be gum, dextrine, flour, or a dry composition of the same material as that of'the flap-gum. |
