520,323. Pile fabrics. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. March 18, 1939, No. 8734. Convention date, July 28, 1938. [Class 142 (iv)] The fabric is composed, especially the pile thereof, wholly or in part of one or more synthetic linear polyamides. These may be used for the pile yarns, the ground warps or the ground wefts or all of these, and the polyamide fibres may be obtained by condensation of monoaminocarboxylic acids or by the reaction of diamines With dibasic carboxylic acids. Crimped polyamide fibres may be used. The pile fabric may be woven face to face on a double shuttle loom, or by means of wires or by terry weaving or as weft pile fabrics, or by sewing or attaching fibres to a backing, or as chenille fabrics. The fibres may be set by treatment with steam, hot water, methanol and ethanol, hot aniline. Various examples of the weaving of pile fabrics on a double shuttle loom are given. The polyamide fibres may be set in the condition or position ultimately desired, for instance uniformly inclined, or disarranged throughout or in portions of the fabric, by treatment with steam, hot water, alcohols or hot benzine. Delustred fibres, colour fibres, fibres containing plasticizers, wetting agents and hygroscopic materials may be used. Shrunk or unshrunk filaments may be used for the pile. The fabric may be sized &e. Fibres of various sizes and lengths, crimped and curly forms of the fibre or tapered filaments may be used. Spontaneously crimpable polyamide filaments such as described in Specification 514,821 may be used and the weaving of these and subsequent treatment of the fibre, including cutting the pile when wet is described. Unmoistened synthetic polyamide filaments may be used as pile elements and be cold drawn after weaving. A part only of the pile elements may be cold drawn thus producing pile of intermingled short and long filaments of the same or different cross-section. Polyhexamethylene adipamide may be used. The weaving of pile fabrics with all the yarns of polyhexamethylene adipamide, and also with the latter pile yarns and ground yarns of cotton on a double shuttle loom is described and also the prior treatment of the ground yarns with hot air of a specified moistness before coning, and the subsequent treatment of the fabric. Also the weaving of a pile fabric with yarns of polyhexamethylene adipamide viscose pile and cellulose acetate. A fabric comprising yarns sewn to a cotton backing by means of a flat metal guide plate with a slot and a cutting attachment is also described. The pile fabrics may be cut into small segments and used as down substitutes for pillows, upholstery &c. Specification 461,237, [Group IV], and U.S.A.
