A method for producing a narrow molecular weight distribution polyalkylene glycol derivative having an amino group at an end under mild conditions. A method for producing a compound of the general formula (1):
CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) n CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 (wherein n is an integer of 1 to 450) comprises the following steps of:
1) a step of producing a compound of the general formula (3):
CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) k-1 CH 2 CH 2 O - M + from a compound of the general formula (2):
CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) k H (wherein k is an integer of 2 to 5);
2) a step of producing a compound of the general formula (4):
CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) n-1 CH 2 CH 2 O-M + from a compound of the general formula (3);
3) a step of reacting a compound of the general formula (4) with acrylonitrile to obtain a compound of the general formula (5): CH 3 O(CH 2 CH 2 O) n CH 2 CH 2 CN; and
4) a step of reducing a compound of the general formula (5) to obtain a compound of the general formula (1).
