An Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) assembly comprising an ICE (Fig.1, 1) and a balance assembly 100 is provided. The balance assembly comprises: a first electric motor 102 coupled to the ICE and configured to rotate a first eccentric mass 106 or weight relative to the ICE, the first eccentric mass being coupled to a shaft of the first electric motor; and a second electric motor 104 coupled to the ICE and configured to rotate a second eccentric mass relative to the ICE, the second eccentric mass being coupled to a shaft of the second electric motor 108. The first and second electric motors are configured to rotate the first and second eccentric masses in order to balance a vibration characteristic of the ICE. The assembly may be controlled to adjust the phase angle between the first and second motor relative to a crankshaft 16. The motors may be mounted to an engine housing. The assembly may also have third and fourth eccentric masses and motors which rotate in an opposite direction to the first and second motors. A method for balancing an ICE is also claimed. |
