Disclosed is a modular transport system (1) for transporting goods (2) around the system (1) on transport trays (3). The transport system (1) comprises two or more transport modules (4) arranged side-by-side so that an upper side (5) of the modules (4) together form a transport plane (6). Each of the modules (4) includes one or more multidirectional drive means (7) for transporting the trays (3) in substantially any direction in the transport plane (6) and the trays (3) and the modules (4) comprises tray orientation detection means (8) for detecting the orientation of the tray (3) in relation to the modules (4). A method for moving goods (2) around in a modular transport system (1) is also disclosed.
