[Class 143] [Also in Group XXXIV] A knife edge bearing suitable for use in spring balances and other weighing apparatus comprises two relatively rockable members each having two knife edges or sets of knife edges facing in opposite directions and rocking on the other member, all the knife edges being aligned along a line formed by the intersection of the planes of the members to prevent movement in four different directions, movement in opposite directions along the said line being prevented by additional knife edges on the rockable members. In the bearing shown one member consists of a U-shaped plate 1 having jaws 2 formed with side lugs 3, the lugs 3 and the part between the jaws being formed with oppositely facing knife edges 4, 5 in alignment. A T- shaped piece 6 is secured to the member by screws 7, 8. The second member consists of a U-shaped plate 9 secured by screws 19, 20 to a plate 12 formed with a central opening 13 and lateral lugs 14. The opening 13 and lugs 14 are formed with oppositely facing knife edges 16, 15 in alignment. The two members are interengaged with the jaws 2 of the first member extending through the spaces above the knife edges 15 of the second member and the shank of the T-piece 6 passing through the opening 13 of the plate 12 all the knife edges 4, 4, 5, 15, 15, 16 being then in 'alignment and preventing displacement of either member in a direction transverse to its plane. Additional knife-edges 21, 22 are provided on the members to prevent lateral displacement. The first member may be provided with an operating arm 24 and a pointer 23 to indicate its angular displacement. |
