A vehicle speed control system including a torque control means to automatically control the rate of positive and negative torque applied to one or more wheels of a vehicle to cause the vehicle to accelerate from rest to a target speed dependent partly on the gradient of the driving surface. The gradient may be determined by a gyroscopic sensor 45. Other factors may be input into the control system: vehicle speed, acceleration and the terrain on which the vehicle is travelling such as snow, ice, grass, gravel or sand. The system may iteratively determine the optimum torque to apply, depending on whether the vehicle is moving uphill or downhill, in order to reduce passenger discomfort by reducing the jerkiness of the motion over the terrain. The control system may include controllers for powertrain 11, brakes 13 and low speed progress 12 (for use <30kph). |
