The invention relates to a brake, shear and cable management system and method for effectively braking and cutting cable from a rotatable drum, such as drilling line, boring line, electrical line, fiber optic line or the like. The brake, shear and cable management system includes a cable management assembly, a cable brake assembly and a cable cutting assembly used in conjunction to manage, retain and sever a spent portion of cable upon the drum.

1. An assembly to manage, retain and sever a cable upon a rotatable drum, said assembly comprising:
a plurality of crawler assemblies configured to engage an extended span of said cable; at least one of said crawler assemblies being movable with respect to another of said crawler assemblies; said crawler assemblies further comprising:
an actively driven crawler assembly configured to engage a first side of said cable; anda passively driven crawler assembly configured to engage a second side of said cable; said passively driven crawler assembly positioned adjacent to said actively powered crawler assembly; a cable brake assembly configured to hold said cable; and a cable cutting assembly configured to sever said cable; said cable cutting assembly positioned adjacent to said crawler assemblies.
