An electronic countermeasure apparatus for modifying a path of an electromagnetic detector signal 204 so as to minimise or prevent incidence thereof on a platform. The apparatus comprises an electromagnetic radiation source 201 and a control system. The control system is configured to cause electromagnetic radiation from the source to be applied to a selected plurality of three-dimensional portions of an atmospheric volume. The electromagnetic radiation heats and/or ionises the air within the portions so as to simulate an electromagnetic radiation path modifying element 202, which may be an atmospheric lens and/or an atmospheric mirror, for modifying the path of an electromagnetic detector. The thermal lens may act to disperse the signal over a larger area to reduce the amount of reflected radiation. The control system may comprise a database on which is stored data representative of a three-dimensional configuration of a plurality of elements, and a processor for mapping the stored configurations to an atmospheric volume. A detector module for detecting an electromagnetic detector signal, and a tracking module for tracking the path of the electromagnetic detector signal may also be included. |
