A system for notifying road users of traffic conditions is disclosed. It comprises: a detection system 40 for roadside installation for detecting traffic conditions in its vicinity; and a notification system 50 configured to communicate with the detection system 40 and notify a road user in its vicinity 50 of the detected traffic conditions near the detection system 40. The notification system preferably includes a wireless transmitter for transmitting the notification, which may be an FM radio transmitter used to transmit an RDS Traffic Program (TP) flag, an RDS Traffic Announcement (TA) flag and an audible notification of the traffic conditions. The system may include a display for the notifications. The notification may indicate that a vehicle is approaching, the direction from which it is approaching and its speed. It may indicate the type of vehicle. It may also indicate stationary vehicles or other hazards. The detection system may comprise a radar detector or a camera. |
