An optical light-emitting device having first and second electrodes and between said electrodes an electron transport layer comprising a compound having one or two thianthrene moieties linked to conjugated or aromatic hydrocarbon other than alkyl-substituted fluorene. Preferably the hydrocarbon is anthracene. Preferably the compound has a glass transition temperature greater than 120 degrees C. Preferably compounds are 1-anthracenyl-9-yl-thianthrene, 1-biphenyl-4-yl-thianthrene or 9,10-bis(1-thianthrenyl)anthracene. Preferably the compound is mixed with a low work function metal complex such as lithium quinolate (LiQ) or a derivative thereof or a lithium Schiff base complex from 1 to 99% by mass. The electron transport layer may be used in association with a phosphorescent emitter, especially a blue phosphorescent emitter. A preferred device comprises a blue phosphorescent layer and an electron transport layer comprising 9,10-bis(1-thianthrenyl) anthracene. |
