560,088. Electric heating. JARRARD, L. H. P., and JARRARD, A. H., (representatives of Jarrard, W. J.), PAYNE, A. S. W., and BARDEN, J. H. July 2, 1942, Nos. 9171 and 10511. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] A tube or electric cable sheath of thermoplastic material is secured to a metallic ferrule which is a snug fit in or on the tube by applying pressure to the tube on the side remote from the ferrule by means of a metal gripper applying heat to soften the plastic in contact with the ferrule and removing the gripper after cooling. A split metal band may be provided between the gripping tool and the tube, the band being removed after the jointing operation or the band may be retained as part of the joint. The ferrule or the band may have slots or perforations into which the plastic material is forced by the pressure of the gripping tool. The heating may be effected by inserting into the ferrule the heating element of an electric soldering tool, the element being of stainless steel or copper coated with nickel or chromium. Heat may be applied by using the ferrule and band as electrodes and applying a high-frequency electric current so that the plastic is softened by heat due to its dielectric loss factor. |
