Pliable coated fabrics having a potential shrinkage and suitable for covering parts of aircraft, drums and cinema screens are made by wetting the fabric with water, allowing it to shrink while wet, coating it with a solution of cellulose derivative and a small proportion of plasticiser in a volatile, water-immiscible solvent having an evaporation rate greater than that of water, and stretching the coated fabric to its original dry width during or after drying. The stretching minutely fractures the dried coating. In use the coated fabric is fitted or stretched over an aircraft part &c. and coated by brushing or spraying with a solution of a cellulose derivative in an organic solvent which dissolves the minutely fractured coating and shrinks the fabric. The primary coating composition may comprise cellulose nitrate, castor oil, dibutyl phthalate, methyl ethyl ketone, and, if desired, a pigment, or cellulose acetobutyrate or acetopropionate, triphenyl phosphate and methyl ethyl ketones and the subsequent coatings may comprise cellulose nitrate, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, pigment, ethyl and butyl alcohol, ethyl and butyl acetate, and petroleum naphtha. The dried coated fabric may be calendered between heated polished rolls. The fabric bearing the primary, discontinuous coating may also be used in tape form to cover seams or for reinforcing or finishing purposes in aircraft, being applied over a brushed-on coating of dope.
|
