A component for a motor vehicle includes a plastic part 4 to which a heat shield 6 is fastened. A projection 8 which is substantially pin shaped extends into a hole in a recess 10 in the heat shield 6 and is reshaped to form a rivet connection having a rivet head 12 that hooks behind the heat shield. The reshaping of the pin 8 to a rivet head 12 is carried out by a corresponding moulded part. A protruding attachment 14 is provided on the rivet head 12 for fastening a metal covering element 16.
