Chlorethenoid compounds, i.e. of the general formula CH2 = C(Cl)- are polymerized in the presence of hexamethylene-triperoxide-diamine and in the liquid phase, the reaction temperature being maintained not higher than 60 DEG C. Typical chlorethenoid compounds are a -chlorostyrene, a -chloroacrylic esters, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. The hexamethylene-triperoxide-diamine is added in amount from 0.1 to 10 per cent of weight of the polymerization mixture; it may constitute the sole polymerization catalyst. The polymers have increased thermal stability and higher softening temperatures. An example describes the polymerization of vinyl chloride in methyl alcohol to produce a white, spongy polymer. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of polymeric vinylidene chloride, polymerization being effected in an aqueous emulsion. German Specification 263,459 is referred to. |
