A drying apparatus comprising a drying circuit 20 for re-circulating working steam and a dryer 22 for receiving material to be dried. An extraction line 40 in fluid communication with the drying circuit 20 for extracting a fraction of steam from the drying circuit 20, and a heat reclaimer 50 comprising a heat pump 60 having an evaporator 64 arranged to recover heat from extracted steam in the extraction line 40 and a condenser 62 arranged to transfer heat to 10 working steam in the drying circuit 20. The amount of steam removed through the extraction line may be proportional to the amount of vapour removed from the material to be dried. An extraction valve 44 controls the flow-rate through the extraction line and may be operated by a controller 102, the flow-rate may be chosen to maintain the working steam amount within a defined range. |
