[Classes 38 (i) and 53] An accumulator is provided with a terminal pillar extension which extends through a wall of the container and terminates flush with the outer surface of the wall. A flexible connector may be connected to the exposed surface of the terminal pillar extension. The connections within the accumulator are embedded in pitch or other material to protect them from acid. Fig. 3 shows a member 17 which is welded to the terminal pillar to form an extension which passes through the side wall 10 of an accumulator. The member 17 is provided with a flat head 21 the outer surface of which is flush with the outer surface of the container. The head 21 is cylindrical in shape and fits into a correspondingly shaped recess in the wall 10, the body portion of the member 17 and the opening in the wall 10 through which it passes being of rectangular shape to prevent turning. Fig. 3 shows one method of connecting a flexible conductor 22 in which the bared ends 32 of the strands are embedded in the member 17 during the casting of the latter. A portion of the insulation 31 may also be embedded to strengthen the joint. The head 21 may be formed with a slot 33 so that if the conductor becomes detached or broken an emergency repair can be made by soldering the conductor in the slot. Fig. 4 shows a modified method of making the connection in which a screw-threaded socket 34 is embedded in the member 17 and receives a screwed plug secured to the end of the conductor 22. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which the conductor is fitted with a head 39 which enters the socket 34 and is clamped in position by a screw-threaded sleeve 38. The accumulator fitted with the terminal connector described above may comprise positive and negative pasted plates separated by porous insulating material containing the electrolyte, the whole forming a pack which must be compressed before it can be inserted in the casing. |
