Systems and methods for automatically controlling playback of a media asset in a vehicle are provided. A presentation of a media asset to a user in the vehicle is generated. A motion state of the vehicle is determined. In response to determining that the motion state indicates that the vehicle is moving, the presentation of the media asset is paused. In response to determining that the motion state indicates that the vehicle is not moving, the presentation of the media asset is resumed. The media asset may comprise video and audio where, when it is determined that the vehicle is moving the audio and video are paused for safety reasons. The media asset may be paused and recorded from the point at which it is determined that the vehicle is in motion, and the playback subsequently resumed using the recorded media asset from the paused position. An alternative media asset such as audio only or a radio broadcast may be offered for playback when the first asset is paused. The movement of the vehicle may be determined by accessing at least one of the speedometer, GPS, brake status, and accelerometer. |
