The present invention pertains to a method that is for producing 1,4-butanediol and that obtains highly pure 1,4-butanediol by means of contacting crude 1,4-butanediol containing 0.01-10 wt% of gamma butyrolactone to a solid catalyst that supports a metal element belonging to group 10 of the periodic table and magnesium on a carrier, converting the gamma butyrolactone to 1,4-butanediol.
