An end effector 1 for a surgical instrument comprising a pair of opposing first and second jaws 2,3 movable between an open and a closed position where the jaws grasp tissue. First and second sealing electrodes 11,15 are located on respective first and second jaws. One or more stop members 21,22,25,26 formed from a compliant material with a Shore-A hardness of between 20 and 80 are disposed on one or both of the electrodes so that the stop-member(s) are deformable when the jaws are closed. The stop-member(s) material may be electrically non-conductive. The stop-member(s) may be formed from a material of Shore A hardness of between 30 and 50. The one or more compliant stop members may be formed from a material so they able to deform by more than 10% when the jaw members close to grasp tissue. Jaw closure may deform the stop-member(s) from a first to a second cross-sectional profile, where the first cross-sectional profile may be trapezoidal. The stop-member(s) may comprise one or more elongated members , which may extend longitudinally along one or both jaws. The electrodes may present a generally concave shape when viewed from the side.
