591,091. Clutches. SOC. D'APPLICATION DES BREVETS COTAL. April 27, 1945, No. 10704. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In order to provide for a gradual engagement, the surfaces of the contacting driving and driven members 2, 5 of an electro-magnetic friction clutch are provided respectively with concentric rings 6, 7, 8 of a soft metal, such as bronze, and rings 9, 10,- 11 of a hard metal, such as nitrided steel. As shown the driven disc 5 carries the magnet coils 3, 4 which are fed through slip rings 15, 16, and is movable axially for engagement with, or dis-engagement from, the disc 2. A spring 14 tends to keep the discs in engagement and an auxiliary stationary magnet 20 is provided for completely disengaging the clutch and holding the disc 5. A sliding contact 24 serves for controlling the coil 21 of magnet 20 and also rheostats 25, 26 in the circuit of the coils 3, 4 for gradually increasing the current to the magnet coils for the clutch engagement. |
