PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide s drive method for an image display device that enables optimization of an output signal to each of sub-pixels, and enables an increase in luminance to be surely attained.SOLUTION: An image display device comprises: an image display panel that is formed by having a pixel constituted of first, second, third and fourth sub-pixels arrayed in a two-dimensional matrix manner; and a signal processing part to which an input signal is input and which outputs an output signal. A maximum value V(S) of brightness in which saturation S in an HSV color space expanded by adding a fourth color to three primary colors is used as a variable is obtained in the signal processing part, and in the signal process part, the saturation S and brightness V(S) in a plurality of pixels are obtained on the basis of the sub-pixel/input signal values in the plurality of pixels, and an extension coefficient αis determined so that a ratio of the pixel in which a value of the extended brightness obtained from a product of the brightness V(S) and the extension coefficient αexceeds the maximum value V(S), to all pixels is a prescribed value (&bgr;) or less. |
