[Class 83 (iii)] A milling or like rotary cutter of the kind having a blade and a wedge side by side in a slot in the body has the blade in contact with a side wall and the bottom of the slot and the wedge tapered transversely and engaging a side wall of the slot through interfitting serrations so that the blade may be adjusted longitudinally in the slot to set two cutting edges simultaneously. In a face milling cutter the slots 12 are formed in a projecting flange 11 of the body 10 and converge inwardly towards the cutter axis, and transversely at an angle alpha, Fig. 8. The blades 13, which may be made from the alloy sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Stellite," have plane surfaces 24, 25, tapering longitudinally and transversely, and cutting edges 15, 16. Adjustment of the blades is effected by sliding them along the bases 21 of the slots which are inclined at the angle requisite for moving the cutting edges 15, 16 in the desired proportions and locking is effected by wedges 14 which are tapered both longitudinally and transversely and have serrations engaging serrations 18 in the slots. As the blades are adjusted outwardly after grinding, as shown in Fig. 7, the wedges are set inwardly by engaging different serrations so that the outer edges 30 of the wedges will always be adjacent the cutting edges of the blades, recesses 19, Fig. 8, being provided at the bases of the slots to accommodate the wedges in their' innermost positions. The transverse taper of the blades is formed symmetrical, as shown by the angles a, Fig. 8, in order that cutting edges may be ground on either side to adapt the blades for use in bodies arranged for clockwise or counterclockwise rotation, the serrations being provided on the wedge sides of the slots in each case. |
