The recognition system (21) has ultrasound sensors (8-15) for detection of distance of objects in a longitudinal direction and/or a transverse direction of a vehicle (1). The sensors are formed in a partial over-flooding condition for recognizing flooding. Control units (20, 22) evaluate signals of the sensors with respect to flood. The control units recognize whether the sensors are present in water or air depending on received and evaluated signal characteristics, duration of echo, number of echoes and occurrence of acoustic short-circuit. An independent claim is also included for a method for recognizing flooding in a vehicle.
