An ion source is disclosed comprising: a mesh or grid target 20; and a nebulizer 3 & 4 arranged to emit a stream of predominantly droplets which are caused to impact upon the mesh or grid target 20. The impact of the droplets on the wire mesh or grid structure is designed to ionize the droplets to form a plurality of ions, or to cause said droplets to form desolvated gas phase molecules and/or secondary droplets. The mesh wire size and spacing is preferably selected so as to provide several discrete impact zones within the overall impact zone or area, while the target may also be angled relative to the spray axis so as to deflect the spray plume towards the inlet 9 of a mass spectrometer. |
