[Class 58] An apparatus for roasting cereal bran comprises a casing 25 containing superposed roasting cylinders 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, communicating with each other in series, and having an inlet for the bran through the casing in the top cylinder and an outlet through the casing from the lowermost cylinder and means within the cylinders for propelling the bran axially from the inlet towards the outlet and also an inlet in the casing adjacent the bran inlet for heated gaseous fluid, such as hot air supplied by an air heater (23, Fig. 5 not shown), which is directed by transverse baffles between the cylinders in the same direction as the bran and which leaves the casing by an outlet adjacent the bran outlet. As shown, the bran after being sieved at 3 and 6 passes by a conveyer 9 and to a hopper 11, and enters the top cylinder and moves in a zig zag direction through the cylinders as shown by the arrow f3, finally emerging from the cylinder 126 at f4 into a conveyer 18, in which sudden cooling of the roasted bran is effected by cold water circulating through a double jacket 22, and being carried to a hopper 21. The roasting vapours escaping at the beginning of the roasting are conducted away by a stack 28 and nozzles 29 are provided in the lower cylinders 125, 126 for the escape of later vapours. A hood 30 is provided above the trough carrying the roasted bran and suction is applied to this by the combination of a venturi cone 34 and a fan 33.
