[Class 53] A dry battery comprises electrodes in the form of shallow trays nesting one within another each tray being provided with a plastic insulating sheathing extending over the outer wall and lip so that when the cells are nested together the sheathing of each cell makes contact with and can be cemented to the sheathing of' adjacent cells. Fig. 2 shows a battery of the Leclanche type in which each zinc tray 1 is. provided with a carbon coating 2 and a sheathing 8 of rubber or polyvinyl chloride or other plastic which may be cemented to the adjacent sheathings with a solution of vinyl acetate. The sheathings may be in the form of pre-formed tubes which are stretched over the trays and allowed to contract over the lips and bottom edges of the trays. Within each tray is a paper sheet 3 having a coating of starch paste on its under surface. A second paper sheet 5 may extend up the walls of the tray as shown at 6, the upstanding parts of the sheet being rendered waterproof and insulating by being coated with bitumen. A cake 7 of manganese dioxide and graphite rests on the sheet 5 and the paper sheets and cake 7 are moistened with electrolyte. Instead of being of the Leclanche type, the cells may use a depolarizer of mercuric oxide and a caustic potash electrolyte. The stack of cells is bound with thread while under pressure. The Provisional Specification states that the completed stack may be enclosed in a sheath of polyvinylchloride. |
