Provided is a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound for producing a PSA type or a PSVA type liquid crystal display element having excellent responsiveness, sufficient pre-tilt angle, low amount of residual monomer, and no or extremely few flaws such as orientation defects and display defects caused by a low voltage holding ratio (VHR) or the like. Also provided is a liquid crystal display element using this composition. This liquid crystal composition has: a sufficiently small viscosity (η); a sufficiently small rotational viscosity (γ1); a large elastic constant (K33); no decrease in refractive index anisotropy (Δn) and nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (Tni); and no increase in solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature (Tcn). In a liquid crystal display element that uses this composition, the pre-tilt angle is obtained sufficiently, the voltage holding rate (VHR) is high, and the response is rapid. Therefore, this liquid crystal composition can yield a liquid crystal display element having excellent display quality and fast response speed, and having no or minimal orientation defects and display defects such as screen burn. |
