Measuring the speed 305 of a vehicle with a speed sensor, processing the speed data to determine the amount of time the vehicle is below a speed threshold 310,325 and evaluating 340 the presence of a traffic control device based the amount of time the vehicle speed is below the threshold. Vehicle location may be obtained via a GPS device which can further store 350,355 detected traffic control devices and alert the driver when near. The type of traffic control device may be determined 345 at least in part by a recent maximum speed 320 of the vehicle. Additionally, the traffic control device can be detected by an accelerometer (e.g. for speed bumps). Specific examples of traffic control devices given in the description include; stop signs, traffic lights, speed bumps and train/railroad tracks. |
