The invention relates to a method for the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in an isolated sample of a subject, the method comprising providing a DNA methylation signature, said signature obtained from the qualitative and quantitative methylation analysis of 36 selected CpG sites. The invention also discloses particular methods in which a Mortality Index score is provided from said signature.
