An adaptive access control and monitor system comprises a portable communication device 102 (smartphone) having a transceiver that is adapted to receive and transmit communication signals via a telecommunication link, at least one imaging sensor that is adapted to provide image data to an image processor. The system further comprises a remote actuator 108 that is actuatable by the communication signals and/or electromagnetic energy; and a control station 104 that is manned by an operator 106 and which is adapted to receive and process said image data and monitor and/or control the remote actuator and the portable device via the telecommunication link. An adaptive access control and monitoring method includes monitoring and controlling at least one portable communication device from a manned remote control station; selectively monitoring and controlling a remote actuator either via a direct communication link or via an indirect communication link through the portable device; and monitoring and controlling the actuator via a wireless coupling between the portable device and the remote actuator. The system and method can be used to monitor cash-in-transit operations from a remote location and control the lock 108a of a safe or ATM that receives a delivery of cash or other valuables. |
