[Class 53] A standard cell of the Weston type is provided with a container 1 having a short partition 4 at the lower end to form two compartments containing the cadmium amalgam and mercury electrodes 5, 6 respectively. Above the mercury 6 is a paste 7 of mercurous sulphate. The lower half of the container below a porous diaphragm 9 is filled with crystals 8 of cadmium sulphate, a solution of cadmium sulphate 11 being introduced into the tube above the diaphragm which is held in position by a member 10.
