Disclosed are a bandwidth control method and apparatus. The method comprises: a set top box acquires a bandwidth required to play a designate channel, and a remaining bandwidth of a user, where the remaining bandwidth is a difference between an available total bandwidth of the user and a total bandwidth that is currently used by another set top box of the user, and the available total bandwidth refers to a total bandwidth that is allocated to all set top boxes of the user, wherein the another set top box is a set top box, other than the foregoing set top box, of all the set top boxes; and in a case in which the remaining bandwidth is less than the required bandwidth, the set top box refuses to play the designate channel. By means of the present invention, a problem in the related art that multiple set top boxes simultaneously use an IPTV service and contend for resources, causing an unsmooth IPTV media service is resolved, thereby ensuring the smoothness of the IPTV service in a family. |
