[Also in Groups XXVIII and XL (a)] A wire getter comprising a hollow container 1 filled with the getter material 2 has a longitudinal slot 4 or 5 along the container to restrict the spread of the vaporized material. The wire is formed by filling a metal tube with the getter material and then swaging or drawing it down to about <SP>1</SP>/ 10 of its original diameter. Initially, a longitudinal saw-cut is made in the container, which saw-cut is then closed up before inserting the getter material. During the drawing-down operation, the saw-cut opens again, Fig. 2. Alternatively, immediately after drawing down, the wire is passed between a guide and a wheel which impresses a V-shaped slot in it, Fig. 3. |
