The method involves calculating a target value (11) of an ink density (20) on a substrate to be printed by a printing press by an empirical inking unit model (18) including a dead time element reflecting a runtime of a copy between printing and measurement, based on a control parameter including a rotational speed of an ink fountain roller and an opening of an ink blade. The calculated value is used as an input quantity for controlling instead of an actual value. The calculated value is exclusively calculated temporarily based on a number of parameters of the inking unit. An independent claim is included for a printing machine.
