Quaternary ammonium salts of formul C6H4.[O(CH2)n.NX.R1R2R3] 2 or C6H3[O(CH2)n. NX.R1R2R3]3, where n is greater than one, X is halogen, and R1, R2 and R3 are lower alkyl, are prepared by treatment of the corresponding tertiary amines with a lower alkyl halide R3X at an elevated temperature. Specified products include the di-ethiodide of 1 : 4-di- and the tri-ethiodide of 1 : 2 : 4-tri-(b -diethylaminoethoxy)-benzene and other compounds in which X is iodine and R1, R2 and R3 are methyl or ethyl. The initial amines may be prepared by reaction of a sodio-derivative of the phenol with a halogenated tertiary amine. In an example, pyrogallol is first treated with sodamide and then with diethylaminoethyl chloride and the resultant 1 : 2 : 3-tri-(b -diethylaminoethoxy) - benzene refluxed with ethyl iodide to give the tri-ethiodide. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the tri-ethiodide and trimethiodide of 1 : 2 : 3-tri - (g - diethylaminopropoxy) - benzene, prepared as in the example. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the statement that the group X may be any acid radical. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
